Two acclaimed AO CMF scientific journals have new publisher

Craniomaxillofacial Trauma & Reconstruction (CMTR) and Craniomaxillofacial Trauma & Reconstruction Open (CMTRO)

Easier on-the-go reading, navigation, and searchability, as well as integrated altmetrics, are among the benefits readers of AO CMF’s official scientific publications now enjoy, following the clinical division’s recent move to SAGE Publishing.


The publications, Craniomaxillofacial Trauma & Reconstruction (CMTR) and Craniomaxillofacial Trauma & Reconstruction Open (CMTRO), were previously published by Thieme Publishers. This transfer went into effect on January 1, 2020. Founded in 1965, SAGE Publishing is an independent international publisher of more than 1,000 journals and has offices worldwide.



The switch to SAGE brings exciting changes to CMTR and CMTRO: There is now a new and interactive e-journal site optimized for on-the-go reading on smart devices. This website also allows for easier navigation and searchability of the articles, as well as altmetrics showing authors and readers how often articles are being read, cited, or mentioned).

CMTR Editor-in-Chief Rui Fernandes looks forward to the publications’ future.

"I envision CMTR becoming the go-to journal for the craniomaxillofacial (CMF) community," he said. "The benefit of publishing in the CMTR journal is that your work will be seen by a global audience of CMF specialists."


SAGE has also launched a slightly updated manuscript submission system, SAGE Track, a SAGE-specific version of the system run by ScholarOne, with a submission system optimized for user-friendliness.

Additionally, AO CMF has redesigned the covers of both journals; the new look—aligned with a change in leadership and publishers—will debut with the March issue of CMTR.
